his elegant and beautiful wood-embedded doll display is supervised by Eiko Serikawa, a member of the Japan Arts and Crafts Association and a doll artist. Based on the "Hitagata" shape, which is considered one of the prototypes of hina dolls, Eiko Serikawa meticulously focused on both the shape and the fabric.
The charm lies in the delicate depiction of the eyes, called "Sasame," which are painted using a brush. The layered light ink creates depth, resulting in a gentle expression that remains captivating. The clothing is richly embroidered with auspicious symbols of cranes and turtles, embodying wishes for long-lasting health.
Wood-embedded dolls are a traditional craft that originated during the Edo period. The process involves mixing paulownia powder with adhesive to mold the body, carving grooves into it, and then pressing fabric into those grooves with a glue-coated spatula to complete the clothing. The refined design and details unique to wood-embedded dolls are particularly appealing. Recently, in addition to paulownia powder, resin bodies have also been used.
